The Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance) serves Canadian researchers, with the objective of advancing Canada’s position as a leader in the knowledge economy on the international stage. POSITION SUMMARY

The Alliance is seeking a dynamic, bilingual information professional who has strong communication and training skills and is eager to work on a pan-Canadian basis. The ideal candidate will bring prior experience in post-secondary education and demonstrated interest in academic research and/or information technology, research software (RS) development, advanced research computing (ARC), or research data management (RDM). Reporting to the Director of Research Data Management (RDM), the Training Coordinator will support the Directors in the Operations and Security division in the development and implementation of nationally coordinated RDM, ARC, RS, and Cybersecurity training and awareness programs and initiatives across Canada. This individual is expected to work collaboratively with a wide variety of internal and external members and project stakeholders. The ability to work with diplomacy, discretion, and tact is essential to the success of the role.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the direction of the Operations and Security Directors, work with various expert and working groups nationally and internal Alliance teams to support RDM, ARC, RS, and Cybersecurity training in Canada at the national, regional, and local/institutional levels.
  • Provide coordination and logistical support as required to ensure the smooth delivery of training initiatives and resource development across RDM, ARC, RS, and Cybersecurity. This may include: scheduling meetings, drafting and distributing agendas, creating and maintaining up-to-date calendars and workplans, following up with partners both internal and external on action items, working with the Alliance Communications team to manage external communications, hosting training-related events and introducing speakers, and managing the technical components associated with virtual or remote training (e.g., creating and managing Zoom meetings, webinars, and any recorded outputs).
  • Participate in the development of training strategies and plans for the Alliance.
  • When appropriate, collaborate with national, regional, and local partners in their delivery of training resources and opportunities.
  • Support the Operations and Security Directors in the development, delivery, assessment, and revision of RDM, ARC, RS, and Cybersecurity training resources and opportunities that
    • meet the needs of a variety of learners – including researchers, research support staff, students, and others – at different stages in their learning journeys,
    • incorporate a variety of approaches and formats (e.g., in-person, webinars, online modules, web guides, workshops)
    • are created with accessibility, open education, and EDIA in mind,
    • and are offered in both English and French.
  • Work with the Operations teams to track, monitor, and report on training initiatives.
  • Collaborate with training professionals in all areas of digital research training to develop and deliver training resources and opportunities.
  • Build training relationships with partners across the Canadian research landscape, including (but not limited to) universities, colleges, CEGEPs, research hospitals, and library consortia.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge normally associated with a Bachelor’s or similar level education in a DRI related field (e.g., computer science, engineering, computational sciences (physics, mathematics, chemistry etc.), data analytics, digital humanities, genomics, data management, library, and information sciences, etc.).
  • Minimum of three years experience developing and offering training or education, preferably at a post-secondary or adult education level.
  • Understanding of basic principles of RDM, ARC, RS and Cybersecurity.
  • Familiarity with technologies that are used to support learning, e.g., content and/or learning management software, LibGuides, webinar technology, and audiovisual content creation programs.
  • Aptitude for complex, analytical work with an attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines.
  • Initiative, innovation, resourcefulness, and flexibility in order to develop relationships across the research ecosystem and beyond.
  • Experience with curriculum design or educational program development.
  • Knowledge of pedagogy and the effective application of different teaching styles to support diverse learning preferences.
  • Highly developed oral and written skills, particularly the ability to explain complex concepts to a wide variety of users.
  • Excellent organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interact with association members, project participants, co-workers, staff of other organizations or government with courtesy, discretion and tact.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with the following qualifications may be preferred. These should be explicitly described in the applicant’s cover letter:

  • Professional experience in an academic institution, or equivalent relevant experience, is highly desirable.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in French and English.
  • Experience with or professional training/certification in curriculum design or educational program development.
